A touch of magic

A touch of magic

Looking for just a little somethin’ somethin’ when it comes to your coverage? Try a tinted moisturiser for a natural sweep of colour – and many benefits

Whether you prefer a ‘barely there’ effect or polished perfection, you don’t need a heavy foundation for flawless skin.

Heavy bases may cover a multitude of sins, but they can also create their own problems, caking your skin in too much colour, cracking and splitting, blocking pores and sliding around if you get too hot.

Even if you’ve found the best foundation for your skin, sometimes a lighter product is all you want to wear, particularly during the day, on holiday or when you’re chilling out at the weekend.

If your skin is in good condition, with no acne, scarring or severe pigmentation to disguise, a full coverage foundation really is redundant: when your skin is healthy and glowing, the last thing you want to do is smother it in make-up. And almost all skin types and tones look better with less coverage.

Plus, with so many foundations out there, it’s really refreshing to try to a simple product that will even-out skin tone, moisturise and (in some cases) protect from UV exposure.

Finding the right product

Although tinted moisturisers are simple and highly effective products, there are still plenty out there to choose from.

You should be able to find a good multi-tasker to suit your needs: some tinted moisturisers contain SPF and/or work as primers, serums and illuminators.

You’ll need a product that you can use as an everyday staple. A treatment that lends a ‘helping’, rather than a ‘heavy’ hand, brightening, smoothing and evening-out the skin. Something super-hydrating, and super-natural in touch, texture and appearance, that transforms skin tone and texture with one quick sweep.

And don’t expect to be faced with a ‘one size fits all’ solution: whether you’re looking for a soft wash, a thin veil of colour or full coverage, tinted moisturisers have all bases covered.

Four of the best

Dermalogica’s Sheer Tint Light SPF20 is one of our all time faves when it comes to tinted moisturiser. With a new and improved formula it offers three benefits: hydrolysed pearl amino acids and cross-linked hyaluronic acid hydrate, helping to improve skin texture and reducing the appearance of fine dehydration lines; physical and chemical sunscreens provide invisible, broad spectrum UVA and UVB defence; and natural light-diffusing iron oxides help to balance skin tone and impart a sheer, luminous glow for a perfect finish. If this shade is too fair, try Dermalogica Sheer Tint Medium or Dermalogica Sheer Tint Dark.

Balance Me BB Natural Perfection Moisturiser SPF25  is a non-greasy, daily use product, protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and adding a natural tint. A super plumping beauty balm, it’s designed to moisturise and protect, with a super fine grade of hyaluronic acid and kukui seed oil to promote naturally radiant skin.

Available in Bronze, Rose and Glow, Amazing Cosmetics’ Illuminate Primer and Highlighter can be worn under foundation or on its own to transform skin from dull to radiant in a flash. A lightweight, water-based primer, it immediately brightens and evens-out skin tone as well as blurring small imperfections. The addition of delicate daisy extract helps to fade dark spots for a smoother, more uniform complexion over time.

If you’re looking for a moisturiser that gradually adds a hint of colour, Elemis’s Total Glow Bronzing Moisturiser could be the product for you. Enriched with Vegetan™, naturally derived from wheat, this delicately scented, daily moisturiser develops a subtle and gradual tan on the top layer of your skin and leaves it feeling nourished and velvety smooth. Formulated with the antioxidant protection of green tea extract and ginger water, it helps to even skin tone and texture, improves skin luminosity and gradually builds an even, natural looking tan.
