Bizarre beauty trends

We’re not even half way through 2017, but some of this year’s boldest beauty trends have the potential to go down in the history books

Like any fashion, trends in beauty constantly evolve – and it’s probably for the best that some of this year’s most weird and wonderful beauty crazes won’t last too long.

We’ve selected some of the most bizarre beauty fads to appear this year, with a more sensible option if you’d rather avoid all the staring…

Clean beauty salons: We’ve all tried clean eating – but the latest trend is to visit a clean beauty salon. The idea is that every product, treatment and utensil used in the salon is eco-friendly, natural and organic: a tall order, but a noble idea. One downside could be the cost, as this is likely to put a rather large dent in your bank balance.

Choose Dermalogica: If you’re keen on “clean skincare”, Dermalogica products embrace skin health rather than cosmetic beauty – and you can use them in the comfort of your own home. All Dermalogica products are designed to improve skin health and are free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colours and fragrances). The minimal packaging reflects the brand’s simple ethos. And if you’re trying to you’re your beauty budget healthy this year, the price of Dermalogica products (which went up on 01/04/17) are being frozen at Beauty Flash for a limited time – so now’s a great time to stock up.

Feather brows: After all that volumising and filling, this wacky trend involves parting your eyebrows horizontally and setting the hairs into a feather-like shape using brow gel, clear mascara or Vaseline. The result is a strange, space-age effect that will most certainly turn heads – particularly if you draw even more attention to your eyes with neon or colour pop make-up.

Brow beauty: If you’d rather avoid the novelty brows, stick with a classic, full and sculpted look using CiD iGroom, a clever dual-ended brow groomer with a unique triangular-shaped soft pencil tip for all shapes of brow, and a built in eyebrow brush to groom brow hairs into place.

Extreme close-ups: Katy Perry shocked onlookers at the Coachella festival with very closely cropped, bleached blonde hair. Although the look was cool on Katy, most of us mere mortals would find the look incredibly tough to carry off – and a cut so short is pretty high maintenance, too, particularly if your hair is healthy and tends to grow out quickly.

Short and shaggy: If you want to go short this summer, consider a more forgiving style like a layered cut with a feathery fringe, or a side parted pixie cut that is super-easy to grow out. To style your short summer hair, try Redken’s Shape Factor 22, a high hold hairspray polymer and polyol system with the shaping power of a hairspray in cream-wax form: it’s a festival must-have.

Floral eyeliner: You need a steady hand and some artistic flair to pull this one off…tiny flowers painted onto your lids and at the eye corners, where your cats-eye flick would usually sit. When performed by a skilled make-up artist, this can look fabulous – but we’re not convinced our DIY attempts would be anything near as cute looking.

Colourful eye lines: If the flowers sound too complicated, jazz-up your eye line during the day by choosing a pastel colour instead of old faithful black or brown. At night, go for an on-trend jewelled tone: check out New CiD iGel in Emerald, Indigo and Midnight Blue for a powerful, statement-making combination.
