Considering a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are all the rage at the moment and you may be tempted to try one in the quest for celebrity smooth skin. But, you may also be anxious about the procedure and worried you’ll be left red faced and sore like Samantha from that Sex and the City episode!

To help you decide if a chemical peel is the answer to your skin dilemmas, we chatted to Victoria Schofield, Education Executive at Dermalogica to get the low down on all things chemical peels. Read on so you can make an informed decision on whether to try this type of skin resurfacing treatment.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is an advanced resurfacing treatment carried out by a trained skin therapist or medical professional. There are different types of peels that vary in strength but typically hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acid are used at potent strength to deeply exfoliate the skin. Skin peeling causes controlled skin injury to stimulate a wound healing response and rapidly increases cell renewal. As skin heals post peel, skin feels smoother, softer and more refined achieving that sort after radiance and glow. A course of peel treatments can dramatically improve challenging skin conditions such as ageing, pigmentation and acne breakouts.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have a peel?

Yes, very sensitive skin, pregnant ladies and people on certain medications. You also have to avoid sun exposure, facial waxing and certain exfoliating products in the run up to your peel. Your skin therapist should conduct a very thorough consultation with you to assess your suitability and advise you on how best to prepare your skin prior to the treatment. Patch testing will also be done at least 24 hours before to assess suitability. These are key things to look out for when choosing who to have your peel with.

How many peels do you need?

Results will be visible after one treatment though a course of 3-6 treatments, typically 2-4 weeks apart will achieve the best results.

What results can I expect to see?

Skin typically looks brighter and smoother immediately, however your skin will need to recover from the treatment and sensitivity, tightness and flaking are common in the days post peel. Results are visible from around day 7-10 post peel. Your Skin Therapist should give you very strict instructions on how to look after your skin in the days post peel. This is extremely important to minimise negative responses and maximise skin recovery.
