Enhance your mood, and your skin, with a wonderful winter beauty boost
We started the week with blue Monday – but we’re ending it on a positive note.
January is never the easiest month: if it’s not freezing temperatures it’s the pressure to diet/stop drinking/quit sugar/stay in and save money.
It’s no wonder you can end up feeling low!
What you actually need, in the middle of winter, is a boost. It makes much more sense to be kind to yourself right now, with a focus on wellbeing (and a hefty dose of pampering) than to punish yourself with dramatic dietary or lifestyle changes.
Eating seasonally really helps to give mind, body – and skin – a boost. Choose wholesome and tasty one-pot meals with plenty of leafy vegetables: widely available at this time of year, steamed spring greens are particularly delicious and packed with vitamin C, which supports your immune system, and vitamin K, helping to strengthen your bones.
Exercise gently: a swim and sauna helps to rejuvenate without exposing you to the elements (and the pool tends to be quieter than the gym at this time of year). After a few lengths, two complete cycles in the sauna (helping to relax your muscles) or steam bath (for a mood-boosting detox) is usually enough to give you a toasty sensation of wellbeing. Drink plenty of water before and after your trip to the leisure centre to keep hydration levels topped up.
Rather than hibernating, consider early evening dates or low-key social get together straight after work. That way you’ll still be home in time for an early night and you won’t be heading home during the coldest part of the day. You might also be able to access “early bird” offers at your favourite restaurants – and as long as you stick to a reasonable curfew, and keep things chilled, there won’t be any crippling January hangovers to deal with.
And if you’ve decided not to drink at all this month (or you always avoid alcohol) there’s a huge boom going on in the alcohol-free drinks market at the moment. New 0% beers are hitting the shelves from leading brands and they are low in sugar and calories as well as being booze-less. Also look out for mocktails packed with super fruits for a glamorous, zero-alcohol boost.
