Trying to master the winged liner? We will get you started

Winged liner is such a hot beauty trend right now however; it takes a lot of skill and time to master the perfect wing. It can be tricky if you are not used to it and hard to learn if you don’t know where to start. We wanted to share with you some tips and tricks as well as a few product suggestions so everyone can master the wing.

There are many different products that can be used to create the perfect wing and finding the one that suits/ works the best for you is vital. Here are your options-

  1. Gel liner. Typically this comes in a pot format and you will need a brush to apply the product. This is probably the most difficult to master however, the right brush can help make the process easier.
  2. A liquid liner. A liquid liner can come in many forms. A pot with the soaked in product sponge applicator is the most classic form of a liquid liner. This can be one of the easier methods as the sponge applicator will pick up the right amount of product and you can hold the applicator close to the eye to get a defined wing. The other form of liquid liner is in a pen form. These are brilliant for beginners as these are great for a quick application as the pen can map out the perfect shape and location of the wing if used correctly. Tilt the felt nib of the pen on 1 side then draw along the last line and wing. The pen creates the shape whilst creating a smooth starting point with a consistent colour pay off.
  3. The classic pencil liner. A pencil is fab for the water line however, for a defined winged liner may be more difficult. If you are looking for a softer, kind of grungy and smudgy look a pencil will help achieve that beautifully, especially when the liner is applied then blended out after along the lash line.
  4. Liquids and pencils still too intimidating? Opt for a black eyeshadow and an angled brush. You can use as much or as little as desired. Great for starting off light and building the colour and shape up. Take a bit of eye shadow push it into the outer part of the lash line then angle the brush and it will made the perfect soft wing with the brush doing all the hard work.

Once you have your chosen your preferred product it then on to the tricky part. Practise makes perfect with any liner look especially a wing so stick with it and it will come together in the end! However, to make the practice part a little easier we wanted to share some of our favourite ways that helped us learn also.

  • You will mess it up to start, don’t let it put you off. Have some cotton buds at the ready to clear up any mistakes as you are going and then after you can touch up and perfect the wing by using concealer. Take some on a brush and run it along the lowest line of the wing – this will help the wing to look crisp and sharp whilst covering up any errors.
  • Don’t try and nail the whole wing in 1 motion. Take it slow and easy, use lots of little strokes and join them up.
  • Look directly into a mirror straight on if not your wings can end up in 2 different directions. Keep taking a step back and checking they are looking even
  • Don’t know where to place the wing? Imagine your lower water line carried on up and out. The tail of the wing should connect with that.
  • Don’t feel like a black liner is your only option. A brown liner can look softer and less intense on the eye. Also brown can be better suited for those with lighter eyes/ skin and hair.
  • Following on from that – don’t be scared to try a coloured liner especially in the summer time. This can add a lovely pop of colour to your eye makeup in an non-offensive subtle way.
