Fresh off the NYC runway, here are the beauty trends you need to try this spring
With London, Paris and Milan’s Fashion Weeks to look forward to, New York has already set the tone for 2019’s biggest hair and beauty trends.
On Tom Ford’s runway, hair was slicked back and secured in knots while a smoky eye took centre stage with cream shadows layered over grey, caramel and plum powder. While the layers added dimension, a final coat of eye gloss helped the effect to catch the light.
Michael Kors’ catwalk had a distinctly 70s vibe with sequins on show and delightful disco make-up. Natural curls and Afros were voluminous and looked divine in the mix with flicked-out eye shadow in black and gold on one model, and violet shadow circling the lids on another. (Plum and rose were popular shades for eye shadow across the catwalks.)
Meanwhile, Anna Sui used brightly coloured wigs to provide a punk aesthetic with multi-coloured eye makeup and winged liner. Collina Strada’s models looked even more artistic with ‘tie-dye’ effect eyes: acid bright creams were created by blending vibrant colours with white before rough-brushing bold splashes of the shades around the eyes, brows and cheekbones. The effect resembled an artist’s palette.
Colour flashes were a feature at Carolina Herrera, too: shocks of fuchsia, orange and blue contrasted with a base consisting of a sheer foundation and highlighter. Eyeshadow was applied more like lipstick in simple blots of colour with unfinished edges. Models all showed off the natural texture of their hair, whether straight, wavy, cropped, curly or undercut.
Unsurprisingly, Oscar de la Renta went for full-on romance with long-haired models wearing tight and low ponytails with a middle parting and a soft wave through the ends. Each was decorated with either a velvet ribbon, an oversized hair-clip encrusted with jewels or embellished hair pins. To complement these adorable accessories, lips were given a soft, ruby stain, blurred and blended on the lips using bright red lipstick in the centre and soft brown matte along the edges.
More understated glamour from Prabal Gurung: models sported a subtly smoky eye with diffused pigment for a ‘lived-in’ yet chic effect. Models with long hair were given lots of volume, while short crops looked super-stylish.
Embellishments, including pearls, studs and chains, were used in Christian Siriano and Adeam’s catwalk presentations. Pearl accents on nails and placed at the inner corners of the eye contrasted beautifully with natural-look make-up, adding elegance and glamour; Swarovski-crystal-studs dotted across models’ cheekbones and foreheads created the effect of a veil. Chains used in slicked-back ponytails added an element of street-style surprise.
And braids were headline news at Coach and Nicole Miller. While Coach sent models down the runway with tight braids and minimal make-up, Nicole Miller’s guest model, rapper JZL the Empress, decorated her rainbow-coloured braids with beads – and she wore them in pigtails.
